Great Grandkids

Livi and Avery, our two great Grandkids are so cute that they deserve a section of their own.  Olivia, aka Livi or Liv, and Avery, are the pride of Grammy and Grampy.  It is a shame that Covid-19 has gotten in the way of visits, playtime, dinners, etc but we will all try to make the best of it and hope that all of us will navigate to the new-normal sometime in 2021.  They have terrific parents and grandparents and we are blessed to be a wonderful, caring and respectful family.  We will do all we can to help assure a quality education for both of them and for those that will venture into the world as months and years go bye.

SANDRA’S PENGUINS

There are over 1,000 Penguins of many media types in Sandra’s Penguin Collection.  A Penguin at the Woodland Park Zoo is named after Sandra.  We provided funding to build the Penguin exhibit at the Woodland Park Zoo.

THE SANDRA & PHIL NUDELMAN SHELL COLLECTION

A major focus of our Interests, Hobbies and Passions, has been the collecting, taxonomy and systematics of marine and terrestrial Mollusks. There are over 70,000 species of Mollusks (seashells et al) and that number is exceeded only by the insects, crustaceans. People collect shells for their beauty, color and variability and in past years, only Kings and other royals, priests and billionaires could afford to collect shells–due to the rarity of some species and the value of certain specimens brought as much as $100,000 for a single shell. Throughout time, Mollusks have been used for food, decoration, carbon dating and at least one species has been used as a form of money, ie the money cowry. We have been collecting shells for over sixty years by self-collecting and continuing on with purchasing or trading shells from dealers and individuals and collecting, buying and trading shells throughout the world. The collection exceeds over 100,000 specimens of differing families, genera, species and varieties and grew into taking up an entire room, “the shell room,” in our home. When it came time to think about down-sizing it was painfully obvious that we could not take the collection with us as we moved to a condo. The collection was too large to interest members of our family so we sought interest from museums with deep interest from the Field Museum in Chicago, the American Museum of Natural History, the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, the Smithsonian in Washington DC and the Burke Museum Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Washington in Seattle. Any of these would be a good home for the collection but, for a number of reasons ie location, loyalty, legacy, etc., we chose the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture as the new resting place for The Sandra & Phil Nudelman Shell Collection. Along with the donation of the collection to the Burke, the Museum hired a well known malacologist, Dr. Melissa Frey, as the curator of the collection. We encourage you to visit the Burke Museum and ask for Melissa and if she is available, she will show you the Collection.
